The Water Types

The element of water is associated with the signs of Cancer, Scorpio and Pisces. Water signs are emotional, sensitive and compassionate. Rivers run deep in this element and nothing is shallow. After a long hard day at work, we long to sink into a nice warm bath, and this is a similar feeling to the protective embrace of a water sign woman, she is the only one who understands, sympathises and knows just what you need.

Neptune was named after the Roman sea god, and given rulership of Pisces, and so her emotions are changeable, choppy, and fluid, just like the sea. Looking out at the ocean it’s difficult to know where it begins or ends, it’s so huge, vast and endless. The Sun and Moon both reflect on her cool water, and in the daytime she mirrors back the warm, golden colours of the Sun, but in the night time she dresses in shimmering sliver and reflects the Moon's light across the shoreline.

The sea is both beautiful and dangerous, and when she is raging a storm, nobody is safe. Neptunian forces operate in ways that are completely beyond our control and she rules over the unconscious. A rich dream life, imagination, and feelings are all part of her realm, but in her darkest hours she can drown in alcohol, fall into temporary madness, confusion and despair. Pisces is full of mystery and secrets, but there is great sadness under those blue waves. Her sympathy is boundless and limitless, and her water distorts and blurs everything. Pisceans are pretty much unfathomable, but that is part of the attraction, you just can’t figure her out.

Water people can brood, particularly Cancer and Scorpio. As ruler of the tides, it is fitting that the Moon should rule our emotions, and finds it home in Cancer. In Cancer, feelings are always active (cardinal) internally and she trusts her feelings, memories and gut instincts. The Moon’s fortunes start off full and bright and then her light begins to diminish, so she understands the ebb and flow of life. The Moon changes signs every two days, and she is compared to the swiftly flowing river. There is great gentleness, vulnerability and softness here, and she needs to be needed. Cancer protects, nurtures and supports, and she expresses a great depth of love for people. The self-sacrificing nature of Cancer is more often of an active kind, rather than passive, like Pisces. The crab has a hard outer shell, but is a softie inside, and she can be hurt very easily.

Poor Scorpio has been accused of not wanting to date, but to take hostages rather than lovers. The jokes can be cruel. Scorpio’s are dammed sexy and some of us might go willingly into their lair, even if it means we can never see our family and friends again! Scorpio is like the frozen lake, and it’s difficult to see beneath her surface, unless you have an ice pick. The physicality of death reveals some of Scorpio's stillness and coldness. However, as a water sign, she is full of intense feeling underneath, and extremely loyal to love ones. The Scorpio woman is full of dark mystery, and there is much more beneath the surface than meets the eye. Ice is the least fluid and she doesn’t let go easily, she takes a long time to thaw out. One word of advice about Scorpio is that she does go to extremes of passionate heat to frozen withdrawal. Nobody else will love and hate with the same intensity. Pluto in Scorpio

Pluto in Scorpio belongs to a generation of people involved in a major confrontation with the darker aspects of life, and the most recent transit occurred in 1983 to 1995. Astrologically, Pluto penetrates to the root of all things and describes our urge to destroy what we have outgrown. To most people Pluto appears to be cruel and destructive, it is known as the god of death and represents the end of chapters in our lives. All forms of power, shared resources, merging, sexuality, survival, finance, banking, death and decay are all ruled by Pluto.The myth of Persephone represents the descent into the underworld (Pluto), she was a virgin goddess playing in the field, when the earth opened up and Pluto appeared on his black chariot drawn by fire-breathing horses. The goddess is abducted, taken into the underworld and raped. Persephone’s mother, distraught by the loss of her daughter, sinks into deep depression, and forbids the crops to grow or the trees or bear fruit. For seven years the whole world is cold and barren, while humanity starves. Finally the gods intervene and Persephone is allowed to return to the upper world for six months. Pluto is also linked to toxic states, healing and regeneration, nuclear power, deadly viruses, and any means of mass destruction. In this light, the list of events that happened during Pluto's transit through its own sign, highlights the massive upheaval in all of the above areas and hopefully the attitudes of many towards these areas of life was also transformed.

A famine devastated Ethiopia between 1983 and 1995. The drought had destroyed the entire harvest. Thousands died of starvation. Some trust issue between governments to distribute food properly delayed the grain arriving in the country. Eventually, aid agencies were forced to buy European grain on the open market. In an attempt to shame Western governments into action, Oxfam donated its largest donation, and widespread television coverage of people dying of starvation in Ethiopia was prompting an exceptional outpouring of private donations. In three days, the British public alone donated 5 million, and within two months, the Western public had donated a total of 100 million. In music, the Band Aid single ‘Do They Know its Christmas? , as well as two Live Aid concerts raised millions more.

On April 23 in 1984, U.S and French Scientists identify the virus known as A.I.D.S. Scorpio’s major influence is human sexuality and detoxification through disease. It was no longer safe to have unprotected sex, and both sex and death were merged together like never before. It was much safer to stay committed to one partner, and this embodied the importance that Scorpio placed on fixity in relationships and powerful sense of survival.

On December 3, 1984, a leak in UNION Cabide’s pesticide plant in the city of Bhopal, India, caused toxic gas (Pluto) to escape, killing and disabling thousands of people. It is one of the worst industrial accidents in history. The toxic gas spread out across the city, burning eyes, lungs, and other organs on contact. Around 3,000 people died in the days immediately following the disaster. Tens of thousands more were permanently disabled, and it is estimated that 20, 000 people have since died as a direct result of the leak.

I am not sure how much significance this next event has on Pluto in Scorpio, but the wreckage of Titanic was found on the Ocean floor, on August 31st 1985. Pluto was in Scorpio with a Jupiter (large) Neptune (ocean-liner) conjunction. At the time, the Titanic was the largest ship ever built. When the ship hit an iceberg, 1,500 people on board drowned or froze to death in the ice cold waters of the Atlantic. I will probably look at this event in another follow-up post.

On October 19, 1987, the world’s financial markets suffered a sudden drop in value. The loss was around £300 billion. In the U.S.A. the chairman of New York Stock Exchange said, “This is the nearest thing to a financial meltdown I’ve ever come across,’ while President Reagan announced he was confident that the U.S economy would survive. The crash came after a couple of years of fast growth in a ‘bull’ market - one characterised by hostile take overs and relentless company mergers. Although it was the most drastic drop in the market’s history, ‘Black Monday’, as it was called, did not lead to depression, and it was not long before interest rates began to fall and investors began to buy again.

Too Close for Comfort

The dynamics of this uncomfortable confrontation in Closer, relates to Scorpio, Pluto and 8th house planets. Pluto brings to the surface much darker emotions and forces us to look at the reality of how we relate. After leaving the sign of Libra with all its pleasantness, politeness and compromise, we reach a stage of intimacy in Scorpio when we want the truth no matter how dirty, sordid and ugly. Scorpio also possesses a deadly sting in its tail, and we talk about irrevocable change when describing Scorpio, so if we do or even say something vindictive just to hurt our partner, there is no way that we can ever take it back. With this in mind, we have to be careful we don’t give our relationships the kiss of death. Still, in Scorpio land you give back as good you get, for it’s the only way to survive. With Julia Roberts she has Sun in Scorpio with Venus conjunct Pluto and so some of her movies do have powerful themes around relationships.

Vanilla Sky: Venus-Pluto Relationships

Vanilla Sky is an interpretation of the Spanish film, Open Your Eyes. The movie stars Tom Cruise (David Aames), Penelope Cruz (Sofia) and Cameron Diaz (Julie). It is a bittersweet love story wrapped in idealism, obsession and tragedy. Cameron’s character has a small role, but she is the main catalyst for the following events. David Aames is a wealthy business owner, who inherited his entire fortune from his father. Aames lives the lifestyle of a bachelor and casually sleeps with Julie. The relationship for him is not serious and he refers to her as his “sleep buddy". However, Julie has deeper feelings and is obsessed and deeply in love with him. One night, David meets Sofia and falls madly in love with her, so at this point he is unaware that it has formed a rather dangerous love-triangle.

The following morning he leaves Sofia’s place and sees Julie pull up in her car. It’s obvious she is consumed with jealousy after being rejected once again. Aames gets into the car and this fateful journey turns uncomfortable when he is forced to confront his lover's real feelings. Aames has been leading his sexual partner on and treating the relationship as superficial and nothing more. Julie explodes emotionally and drives the car off the Central Park Bridge. The event painfully shadows the death of his parent's in a car crash. Julie is instantly killed and David survives the trauma, but is left horribly scarred.

The film is a beautiful and disturbing portrayal of true-love, rejection and transformation. We watch Aames painfully try to win the affection of Sofia in his new form, but with zero success.The movie progressively moves into a dream state where he envisions his “ideal” romance, and enters the lucid dream life with his facial disfigurement. David has a successful operation and his old skin peels off and his appearance is completely re-newed. However, his unconscious keeps erupting into his dream life and is twisting his fantasy world into a terrifying reality, forcing him to confront his own repressed nature.



The relationship themes, closely describe Venus-Pluto aspects and Pluto in the 7th house. Pluto symbolizes death and rebirth, elimination and transformation. The unconscious becomes conscious through profound purging and cathartic experiences. Pluto urges us to bring changes deep in consciousness, and thus transform life. David’s relationships are powerful and transforming, but also violent and destructive. Love can not exist on a superficial basis and if the person tries to relate on a surface level, destiny takes over and attracts the Plutonian side of life. These people are often drawn to obsessive, demanding and jealous partners, and there is a somewhat fated quality in relationships and the involvement is usually intense and highly complex. Pluto represents regeneration and its effect can be seen as the shedding of an old skin to reveal another.

Partners become the catalyst for evolutionary changes and sometimes the individual attracts relationships that are compulsive and contain deep rooted problems. More usually, it takes a powerful relationship to cleanse the psyche and facets of the nature that have been deeply repressed and buried. We could surmise that the early trauma of losing both parents at a young age, blocked his real feelings. Aames has kept relationships on a superficial basis only, until he met Sofia. Through the agency of others an individual attracts what they have suppressed, denied and pushed down. Plutonian partnerships can be traumatic and frequently fall into crisis. In the film, David’s best friend talks about the Sweet and the Sour in life. "The Sweet isn’t so sweet without the Sour," he states. Now, Julie who probably has a Pluto chart, confronts him with real emotional honesty which he finds disturbing and she challenges him about the lack of depth in their relationship. To Scorpionic people, relationships are very important.

David Aames relationship with Julie spiralled into a massive catalytic event, and he surfaced from it with permanent scars. Plutonian relationships often leave people permanently and psychologically scarred. However, this experience forced him to look more deeply at love. David created his ideal version of romance in his lucid dream state. Still, buried and repressed feelings tormented him when he should have felt his happiest and most contented, and his real wounds were not the surface ones, but went back much further and deeper and forced him to face the dark shadows left behind by his past. Any person born with Venus in Scorpio seeks relationships that provide emotional depth, intensity and the potential for transformation. A Plutonian child may have faced the premature realities of death, abuse, jealousy, violence and destructiveness in early childhood. In turn, these early feelings have a profound impact on feelings about intimacy and family. Sometimes sexuality and money are linked and the child often learns what lies beneath the surface of life. Sometimes Moon-Pluto aspects signify the death of mother or loss of someone in the environment, and the parent fell into deep mourning. The Moon relates to the body and perhaps she had feminine problems to do with the organs, womb, breasts, menstruation, pregnancy, hysterectomy, etc. Hidden problems in the body may have been diagnosed.

Perhaps she was attracted to the hidden or the occult, psychology, healing, and anything to do with discovering and enhancing inner-strength through growth-promoting areas. The mother may have possessed tremendous stamina and strength in the face of crisis. When forced to rely on her survival instincts and powerful insights throughout life, she may have faced dark, difficult and traumatic challenges. The water elements take all shapes and forms: the pond, to the calm, tranquil and sometimes violent sea, or the hard frozen lake. Water signs tend to be ‘deep’ and introverted, they value relationships and need emotional bonds and closeness with others. At worst, they can get waterlogged and bogged down by too much negativity in their environment, and there is often a vulnerability in all water signs. Sometimes prone to suffering from extreme ‘mood swings’ the water types are often ‘inarticulate’ souls. Scorpio Rising

The Ascendant is the first point on the chart wheel and forms the cusp of the first house. It represents the face a person presents to the world, and it can act like a mask that hides other parts of the personality. The Ascendant forms one of three most important chart points in natal astrology. A Scorpio Ascendant is the most mysterious, intriguing, secretive and magnetic of all the rising signs. Scorpio directs it energies attempting to penetrate into the heart of the situation. The Scorpion desires to know what goes on beneath the surface of life so that it can perceive its inner meaning. Like all water signs, Scorpio is sensitive and enjoys all the emotional drama that was lacking in Libra. Scorpio experiences the depths of emotions and it tends to go to extremes, and has a reputation for being the dark, broody and manipulative sign of the zodiac. Halloween is celebrated during the month of Scorpio, the “doors between worlds” open and the connection between humans and the spirits of the dead is said to be intensely heightened. Scorpio is associated with the descent into the underworld. For the most part, this signifies the journey to the very depths of our psychological selves and forces us to confront our inner demons.
