I watched an episode of Supernatural called My Bloody Valentine, and it had a demon called the Famine, who inflicted humans with a compulsive hunger for whatever the soul hungered. After the individual died from his compulsion, the demon would gobble up their soul. Some needed love, food and even companionship to feel full. I was thinking about what sort of astrological themes would relate to this type of hunger. I believe we look to the Moon when assessing what we need to feed ourselves with emotionally and physically. In fact, many eating disorders, including anorexia and bulimia are usually seen through challenging aspects to the natal Moon. Both Taurus and Cancer are particularly food driven signs and the Moon rules over Cancer and is exalted in Taurus.
The sign, house placement and aspects of the Moon, reveal where we act compulsively and in what manner, especially when we are feeling insecure and unsafe. The Moon in the 2nd house may need possessions, money and physical objects to feel safe. Those with Moon in 7th house crave other people; the Moon in the 11th house might need a social group in order to feel secure. The Moon in Gemini needs to socialize, talk, read and make connections with people. How can we tell if we're acting emotionally hungry in that area? Usually there is a compulsive need, over-dependency, clinging and anxiety in that particular part of the chart. The Moon describes how we habitually react to situations and our automatic responses. The moon also tends to describe what we find comforting or at least familiar. Everyone feels anxiety from time to time and this is only natural. It becomes a problem when lunar hunger dominates the personality
The Moon in one month travels through all 12 signs of the zodiac and has a close relationship to our fluctuating moods and menstrual cycles. The Moon is nocturnal and reflects our emotional side, unconscious, feeling responses and soul nature. The Moon reveals our basic needs. According to some astrologers the shadow side of the Moon is the monster that devours everything.
