Moon-Neptune: The Highs and Lows
I had a question about Moon square Neptune and manic depression. Usually this isn’t indicated alone by Moon-Neptune. What I have read is that the condition seems to be one of dark depression followed by periods of elation and happiness. No single placement or astrological configuration represents the ‘signature’ for manic depression. However, the emotional life of Moon-Neptune may mirror some of the ‘signs’ of manic depression, in regard to the emotional highs and lows of this contact.
Astrologically Moon-Neptune acts like an emotional sponge and there can be an insatiable hunger for love and affection. There is deep longing to be submerged in others. The individual longs for the fantasy world and a place that is far removed from harsh reality. The contact can create deep fears around loneliness and isolation, however, the imagination and depth of feeling can keep them emotionally fulfilled. The negative side of Neptune is addiction, hallucination, disillusionment, escapism, dissatisfaction, and melancholy. There is often a great need to feel needed and to help society in some way. Emotional difficulties and physical illness may be a constant source of unhappiness, or perhaps the mother (Moon) suffered in some way with Neptunian ‘afflictions‘.
C.E.O Carter refers to the Moon-Neptune type as those that end up in some kind of scandal. The female type may be an invalid, recluse or a nagging partner. There is always deep discontentment and high emotional tension and a liability to being deceived by others or to suffer from various forms of disillusion. Carter believes the type can have parasitical tendencies.
Furthermore, there is the martyr type qualities and the victim-hood inherent in this contact. There may also be suffering through various forms of guilt and torment. Moon-Neptune can have dependency needs, poor boundaries and enormous empathy and compassion for all. There is a sense of loneliness and sometimes great sadness too. Liz Greene says that Moon-Neptune types are eternally hungry and yet offers herself or himself up as food to every hungry mouth that comes along. Greene also links the contact to eating disorders.
Marilyn Monroe had a Moon-Neptune aspect across her Asc-Dsc axis forming a t-square with Saturn. The feeling of rejection (Moon-Saturn) and craving emotional fusion (Moon-Nep) can be seen in this extremely tense t-square. Her mother was taken to a psychiatric hospital when she was a little girl and Marilyn's death was accidental suicide, murder or she had taken her own life. The circumstances around her death created a lot of scandal. Anne Frank had Moon-Neptune conjunct in her 2nd house and was the ’medium’ for the millions of people who suffered during the Holocaust, reflecting on their feelings, sadness and suffering.
