When analyzing the composite chart we look at the composite Sun to see what is the meaning and purpose behind the relationship? Read here - Composite Sun in Houses, part one and two. The composite Sun reveals why you have both come together and the potential of the relationship. We can form a composite chart with every single individual in the world, however, there are only a few people that we form close bonds with. When we meet somebody and begin a relationship it sets the composite chart in motion and even if you both break-up, the transits to the composite chart can still reflect changes in that relationship.
The transits to the composite chart can be analysed when a couple first meet. I have personally found this area of composite astrology, quite fascinating. I have been with my partner for 6 years, and when we first met, we had transiting Jupiter conjunct our Libra Ascendant. I think this describes a positive contact and it symbolised the birth of the relationship. Transiting Saturn was also conjunct our composite M.C in Cancer. In a normal horoscope we would read transiting Saturn conjunct the M.C as an ’individual’ that is forming in the outer world, it can mean rewards, promotion, increased responsibility and it often reflects a critical moment in the professional life. Saturn reaching the M.C reaches the cultivation point and the individual takes shape in the world of form. However, with a composite chart we say the ‘relationship’ takes shape and form and crystallizes in the outer world.
Uranus was also transiting through our composite 5th house and formed a square to composite Sun and Moon in Gemini in the 8th house. At the beginning of the relationship I fell pregnant unexpectedly, so the relationship experienced Uranus in the 5th house through a new baby (5th) and sudden changes (Uranus) in the domestic (Moon) life of the relationship. Transiting Uranus square composite Sun, aligned with our core purpose and the relationship went through dramatic changes. Saturn transits to the composite can mean a greater burden, limitation and further responsibility. A relationship under Saturn transits may become more serious and we re-asses the ’relationship's’ goals, limitations and commitment. A powerful Saturn in the composite chart may show greater burdens and limitation in that relationship. However, if the couple work hard they can crystallise their efforts into material form and reap rewards. A natal Sun-Chiron aspect can also show limitation and wounds to the life-force of the relationship.
Let's take the composite Sun-Chiron aspects. I have seen these many times when a relationship involves the unavoidable inclusion of limits from the past. The past may be an ex partner who wants big maintenance payments, or it may be the children from a former marriage. These situations can cause a lot of pain, especially where the children are involved, because no matter how mature and conscious the two people involved are, there will be conflicts, divided loyalties, hurt feelings, and perhaps also financial restrictions. It is not a question of altering attitudes. If a couple do not experience limits in such circumstances, then we probably won't see Sun-Chiron in the composite chart. I have sometimes seen Sun-Chiron in a composite when two people want very badly to have children but are unable to do so. This is a wound which can make two people think much more deeply about the collectively sanctioned "purpose" of a family to give them a direction in life. Another example may be a partnership where there is a great age difference, and the younger partner must watch the other grow old and frail. No amount of love and commitment can turn the clock back. Or there may be a physical handicap in one partner which may be genuinely and deeply accepted, but which limits the mobility of both people. Yet another example is a mixed marriage, or a homosexual relationship, both of which may provoke animosity among neighbours who are xenophobic or too rigid in their definitions of normality. The composite chart does not have the individual consciousness of an individual birth chart. Many of the obstacles and blocks in the relationship would have to be accepted on some level. Uranus transits bring changes, excitement, and fluctuation to a relationship. The couple may have a complete change of lifestyle when Uranus transits over the composite Sun. There might be more responsibility at home when transiting Saturn conjuncts the composite Moon, and a couple may be put under extra strain in the domestic sphere and emotional life of the relationship feels much heavier and restrictive.
My composite chart currently reflects the relationship hitting an extremely tough period. We have transiting Pluto square composite Mars in Aries in the 6th house, and we have hit a real rough patch financially. We are finding it extremely difficult to survive and function on an everyday level (6th). Pluto is threatening the potency, drive and initiative of the relationship. Mars has a tendency to feel trapped in the 6th house and there is the possibility of some violent eruptions. In an individual natal chart when transiting Pluto squares Mars, it can show arguments, accidents, violence. It can also show cultivating resourceful qualities and fighting (Mars) for survival (Pluto). In our composite chart it is the relationship that is ‘fighting’ under extreme pressure.
The previous actions and decisions that we have both contributed towards the relationship, may have decided our ‘fate’. I do believe actions accumulate over time and then the big transits trigger the events. I have noticed that the Pluto transit is affecting him more. I have felt the strain too, but many of his natal planets are plugged into composite Mars. The transit is triggering his natal chart, and composite Mars triggers his nodal axis. He has his South Node in Cancer in the 8th house and North node in Capricorn in the 2nd house, and it is forcing him to develop self-sufficiency and resourcefulness (NN Capricorn/2nd). When examining transits we need to see what planets are also being activated in the natal chart. Sometimes a change can affect one individual in the relationship more than the other, and this will be reflected in the individual transits. However, the relationship's first meeting should reveal some powerful transits at work, and the ongoing struggles and life events will unfold, so keep a close eye on transits in the composite chart.
