The third sign of the zodiac is the first of the human signs (i.e., Castor and Pollux). It's the the first of the air signs, the realm of mental and social relationships. Often, as is the case with Castor and Pollux, there is a sibling relationship for the Gemini to deal with, and more often than not, it is one that challenges rather than supports the Gemini's position. Whether the duelling adversary is an actual twin or simply a sibling, or even associate, Gemini's abilities are exercised and stimulated, like Aries, by having a sparring partner. But as we have already observed, the sparring takes place mentally or intellectually for the Gemini, as opposed to the more physical or active challenge demanded by Aries. Fro Gemini, information can be a way of preserving independence and maintaining detachment. It is a healthy defence. Gemini needs to be in touch. The more one knows about the world, the less likely one is to be trapped in an emotional quagmire. I know many Gemini's, and people with Moon or ascendant in Gemini, who simply must watch the news on television every night, or must have a newspaper to read in the morning. Gossip can provide the same satisfaction to some Geminians. If one isn't in touch with everything that's going on, one might sink down into a terrible swamp.
